Defensive lineman Fletcher Cox has agreed to a six-year contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, which will keep him in the City of Brotherly Love until 2022. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $103 million, with $63 million in guaranteed money.
This means that Cox will have the most guaranteed money for a non-quarterback in NFL history. The total value of the deal, makes him the second highest paid non-quarterback in league history, according to NFL Research. Cox had previously skipped a month of organized team activities, as he and his agent were trying to work out a long term deal with the team.
Cox has yet to establish himself as a household name in the NFL, but he has been one of the league’s most disruptive defensive lineman for about a year and a half. Cox was a Pro Bowl snub in 2014, but that same year, former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly called Cox the Eagles team MVP.
Last season, Cox had the best season of his career, as he recorded 9.5 sacks, 104 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 20 quarterback hits. Cox finished second among defensive lineman in quarterback hurries (54).
Only Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett (57) had more QB hurries than Cox. Cox earned the Pro Bowl nod last year, which was the first time in his career that he got to the Pro Bowl. The former Mississippi State Bulldog also earned second-team All-Pro honors, and he was voted by his teammates to be the Eagles recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award.
The relentless lineman figures to be a mismatch for interior lineman, as he will be a three technique lineman in new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s 4-3 defensive system.
