The Colts announced Thursday that they have extended GM Ryan Grigson through the 2019 season, notes Ian Rapoport and Pro Football Rumors. One day after the regular season ended, owner Jim Irsay announced a 4-year contract extension for HC Chuck Pagano and said Grigson would be extended as well. The specifics of the extension were just announced today.
Grigson was hired in 2012 after spending several years in the Eagles organization. His first draft pick as the Colts' GM was QB Andrew Luck, but has not had nearly the same success as the 2012 draft, which also included WR TY Hilton and TEs Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener.
During the rough 2015 season which saw Indy go 8-8, Grigson and Pagano had their differences and were involved in numerous arguments throughout the year, but were able to work it out after the season.
The 2014-15 offseason saw Grigson make many moves, including bringing in free agents Frank Gore, Andre Johnson, Trent Cole, and Todd Herremans, and drafting trailblazing WR Phillip Dorsett in the first round of the draft. While these are good players, the Colts had the #1 ranked offense in 2014 and did not improve much on the defensive side. Instead of drafting Dorsett, I felt Grigson should've drafted someone on defense, like S Landon Collins of Alabama or DT Malcom Butler of Texas.
If Grigson wishes to stay in Indy for the length of the extension, then he must improve upon a lackluster defense that was a major downfall to the Colts in 2015.
