On Jan. 15, 1973 the Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII by the score of 14-7. The Dolphins defense played a nearly flawless game by only allowing the Redskins offense to cross the midfield just once, while Miami's offense used their great field position to score two touchdowns.

On the Dolphins third possession of the game, they found themselves on their own 37 yard line. Dolphins quarterback Brian Griese hit Paul Warfield for an 18-yard gain to the Redskins 45 yard line. After three more plays by Miami, Griese hit Howard Twilley for a 28-yard touchdown pass.

After the Redskins moved the ball from their 17 yard line all the way to the Dolphins 48 with just two minutes remaining in the first half, Miami's linebacker Nick Buoniconti intercepted Redskins quarterback Billy Kilmer's pass at the Dolphins 41 and returned it all the way to the Redskins 27 yard line.

The Dolphins Jim Kiick ran for three yards, as did Larry Csonka, while Griese passed to Jim Mandich for 19 yards, and then Kiick gained one yard to get to the Redskins one yard line with 18 seconds left until halftime, but Kiick was able to score from the one.

The Redskins only touchdown came with 2:07 left in the game, which resulted in a Dolphins mistake on a missed field goal attempt, with the fumble by Garo Yepremian, being picked up by the Redskins Mike Bass and returned 49 yards for the touchdown.
