Hasselbeck, 40, played pretty well in 2015 backing up an injured Luck, starting eight games and going 5-3 in those starts. He completed 61% of his passes for 1,690 yards and nine touchdowns, while also throwing five interceptions. Hasselbeck stated that he planned to return for an 18th NFL season, and HC Chuck Pagano said the team "would love" to have him back. I think the struggles in the 2015 season and the talk of Pagano and GM Ryan Grigson's job security throughout the season woke them up and they have decided to go in a different direction. The two did sign extensions earlier this offseason so their jobs are secure, but I think they realized they need to have a slightly younger quarterback behind Andrew should he get hurt.
MARCH 3: The Colts have extended a qualifying offer to TE Jack Doyle, the team announced in a press release. TEs Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen are set for free agency, and the team only has Erik Swoope and Cameron Clear on the roster. Doyle provides a solid depth piece at a low price and has more experience than both Swoope and Clear.
MARCH 4: The Colts have told veteran WR Andre Johnson that he will be released, Adam Schefter reported. An earlier report suggested Johnson had played his final snap in Indianapolis.
Johnson had spent the first 12 seasons of his career in Houston before signing a three-year, $21MM contract prior to 2015. Indy looked to Andre to provide somewhat of a veteran presence that Reggie Wayne had provided for so many years. However, he was a disappointment (as were the Colts in 2015), averaging a career-low 31.4 yards per game.
He only caught 41 passes for 503 yards and four touchdowns, by far the worst season of his career. Johnson looked poised to catch passes from Andrew Luck, but instead had to receive from Hasselbeck and a few other guys, which might have led to his undoing in Indy.
