Around 4:30 p.m. ET in Hollywood, Florida, an officer began following Mason when the officer registered Mason's car traveling at 75 mph in a 35-mph zone. Mason avoided being pulled over at first, but eventually traffic in the area forced him to bring his car to a stop. When the officer began interacting with Mason, he noticed the smell of marijuana in the car.
The officer asked Mason to step out of the car several times, but Mason braced himself sturdily within the confines of his vehicle. As a result of his non-compliance, and having received ample warning, the officer tased Mason in order to subdue and arrest him. He was later transported to a local hospital for medical clearance.
Mason has shown flashes of productivity in his two years with the Rams out of Auburn, amassing 972 rushing yards and five touchdowns in a mostly-backup role. This offseason was going to be crucial in determining his future on the depth chart with the team, backing up 2015 Offensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowler Todd Gurley.
The Rams released the following statement in response to the arrest: "We are very disappointed to learn of an incident involving Tre Mason in the Miami, Fla. area Saturday afternoon. We are in the process of obtaining more information about the facts surrounding this incident and will have no further comment at this time."
