The
Bills draft might have been the best value of any draft in the league. Shaq Lawson and Reggie Ragland are two tough defenders that quickly infuse talent
into Rex Ryan’s defense. Both players could have been drafted in the top 15
picks, so getting Lawson at No. 19, and Ragland at No. 41 are exceptional
values. Adolphus Washington in the third round is another great value
that will help bulk up the defensive line, and Cardale Jones in the fourth round could end up being the steal of the draft if he becomes the player that we saw
in the National Championship two years ago.
In the fifth round, the Bills picked up Jonathon Williams, the most underrated RB in the draft and a workhorse out of Arkansas. All of these picks have exceptional value, but the only knock I have is they didn’t address some serious offensive needs, only drafting an RB when they already have LeSean McCoy, Karlos Williams, and Mike Gillislee, and a QB that will be a project for a few years on the offensive side of the ball.

The
Dolphins got the best value of the first round, selecting the No. 1
player on many teams boards in Laremy Tunsil. While his off the field issues
are a small concern, this pick immediately boosts the line, which has plagues
Miami for years. Ryan Tannehill has been sacked more than any other QB in the
NFL, and Tunsil will be a valuable guard, and add much needed depth behind two
injury prone tackles. It was an A+ pick. However, the rest of Miami’s draft is
suspect.
With a need at LB, CB, and some young DE that could eventually take the place of Cameron Wake or Mario Williams, Miami only drafted one defensive player in the first five rounds; a reach on CB Xavien Howard with first-round prospect Mackensie Alexander on the board. RB Kenyan Drake will add a dimension in the backfield, but there were much more complete players on the board, and the Dolphins drafted three WR type players, which is the only position they were 100 percent comfortable with going into the draft. Scooby Wright III was still available in the seventh round, when Miami selected QB Brandon Doughty and WR/TE hybrid Thomas Duarte. Both players were a good value, but neither address a need that Wright had a chance to come in and fill immediately.

Without
a first round pick, the Patriots made the most of the rest of the draft,
trading back multiple times and stock piling players, as they usually do. Cyrus
Jones in the second round is a good value that will develop nicely in
the Patriots secondary. The rest of the draft they stockpiled players at
positions of need, including two offensive lineman, two linebackers, and two
wide receivers.
The
Jets had many questionable picks in this year’s draft, but the one that puzzles
the most is Christian Hackenberg. The Jets already have two young QB’s in Bryce
Petty and Geno Smith, so this pick is effectively signaling the end of both of
those investments.
The Jets might be trying to use him as leverage to brig back Ryan Fitzpatrick, but he is a player who struggled in college, and their were much better prospects available at quarterback, and guys who have a chance to be ready to start week one. Darron Lee in round one is a good player, but he is another project who has to develop mentally and physically before making an impact in the NFL.
Third round pick Jordan Jenkins is a good prospect, but is limited as a pass rusher, and will struggle to guard backs and tight ends. They did not address cornerback until the fourth round, and traded away a lot of picks.
