Well aware of this situation, the Dolphins new head coach, Adam Gase, has decided to call in some reinforcements from someone who happens to know a thing or two about playing in this particular offense, welcome Peyton Manning.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Manning visited the Dolphins early in the spring to meet with Gase, who happens to be his former offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos, and offered to help advise Tannehill on the offensive scheme.
"It was really cool," Tannehill said. "A guy that had his career, the living legend he is, coming off a Super Bowl winning season - it was really cool just to be able to sit and pick his brain about things he's done in this offense and football things in general: snap counts, things you like, the way you want guys to run routes, little details about the game. We really just got to talk the game. We really just got to talk the game, which is something we both love."
According to Jackson, it was Manning's idea to have the meeting. It would be more than a stretch to say Peyton is considering coaching for his post- retirement career. Its also been well reported that Manning is not seeking a career in the front-office or a role in television, at least for this year.
Manning's tutelage of Tannehill is probably nothing more than a former player and friend helping out a former coach, but its also not a stretch to assume that the future Hall of Famer is testing out what a life of coaching might feel like.
Whatever the true nature of Manning's visit was, I'm sure Ryan Tannehill was extremely grateful for the advice.
"At that time, we weren't able to meet with the coaches or anything, so I didn't really have a great handle yet," Tannehill said. "So I had a few questions (for Manning). If he comes back now, we can have a completely different conversation."
