2016 NFL Draft Grades - NFC West

Having supremely talented defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche from Ole Miss fall all the way to the 29th pick makes this an incredible value pick, though comes with the caveat of hoping his off field troubles are a thing of the past. third-round pick Brandon Williams of Texas A&M has top-tier athletic ability in the secondary, but his production did not reflect his potential and caused him to drop to Day Two.  Evan Boehm of Missouri is expected to fill a need at center, and Marqui Christian from Midwestern State University is a “concussive hitter” who has a chance to get plugged in at safety.

Los Angeles Rams (B)

With the outcome of trading away their overall number two pick to receive a litany of draft picks in the RG3 sweepstakes in 2012, it stands to reason that the Rams would know better than to put all their eggs in the draft-a-franchise-quarterback basket. But Jared Goff of California was the highest-rated quarterback on most analysts’ draft boards and the Rams feel he can be their quarterback of the future.

The Rams made sure to add some talent to surround Goff with. In the fourth round, they added an over-the-middle target in 6’6” Western Kentucky tight end Tyler Higbee, and a slightly larger complement to Tavon Austin in South Carolina receiver Pharoh Cooper.

San Francisco 49ers (B)

Grabbing Oregon defensive end DeForest Buckner with the seventh overall pick is a huge boon to a Niners defense that has been decimated over the last couple seasons. Trading up for a second selection in the first round to grab Stanford guard Joshua Garnett has great potential since he’s an athletic prospect who could fit well into Chip Kelly’s scheme, assuming his pass protection improves.

Jeff Driskell turned his collegiate career around after transferring from Florida to Louisiana Tech, putting together respectable passing numbers in his last two season. But still has a lot to prove if he plans to have an elongated career. Running back Kelvin Taylor is an interesting selection out of Flordia. If he can put up even half of the production of his father, former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor, he’ll be successful.

Seattle Seahawks (C)

In multiple opnions, selecting Texas A&M offensive tackle Germain Ifedi in the first round was a bit of a reach, so that brings their overall grade down. The class of Seattle’s draft is Alabama defensive tackle Jarran Reed. Mel Kiper had him ranked in his top 25, so getting him at 49 is a major steal. Especially since he can be inserted into the lineup and have an impact almost right away. Nick Vannett, third round pick at tight end out of Ohio State, was one of the top prospects at his position as a huge target (6’6”, 257 pounds) with good hands. And Notre Dame running back C.J. Prosise is a big back with experience at wide receiver, so he can be a major threat as a pass-catching back out of the backfield.
