The Raiders have also added Bruce Irvin and Sean Smith to their defense this season. Nelson, a nine year veteran earned his first Pro Bowl appearance last season. Nelson also was tied for the league lead in interceptions with eight. The Bengals are moving on from Nelson, because 2013 third round pick Shawn Williams is ready to take his place.
The Raiders struggled with their secondary last season, also Charles Woodson retired, leaving a void at safety. With all holes on the defensive side filled, Oakland has the luxury of taking the best player available with the 14th pick in the draft. Nelson’s role in recent seasons has included playing on the line of scrimmage, and occasionally rushing the passer.
Nelson, 32 is at the back end of his career, which is why no one knows if he can repeat 2015 again. Nelson also recorded 72 tackles, and 14 passes defensed last season. Nelson has big hitting ability and tremendous ball skills, which is why the Bengals had a very successful defense last season. With new free agent signings and a young nucleus, the Raiders have a great chance of competing with the Broncos for the AFC West next season.
